Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region

Countries of the Arab Region were the cradle of some of the most ancient civilizations on earth. The Egyptians, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Hittites, Babylonians, and Arabs; all flourished in North Africa, Mesopotamia, the Levantine Coast, and the Arabian Peninsula. The wealth of material culture inherited from these civilizations is unparalleled.

Moreover, with a coastline that extends for more than 40,000 km,  represented in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf,  in addition to the inland waterbodies, such as,  the series of rivers, lakes and canals, the Arab Region  has an enormous wealth and diversity of maritime and underwater cultural heritage.

Hence, this special issue of the English version of the Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists is dedicated to research related to Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region. It aims to present different aspects of the tangible , intangible and living maritime culture that thrived along the coasts of region since the earliest times.   

The scope of the special issue includes:

1)  Boats and ship archaeology.

2)  Anchorages, harbours and ports.

3)  Experimental maritime archaeology.

4)  Maritime trade and ancient economy.

5)  Maritime rituals, practices and traditions.

6)  Riverine and waterfront heritage.

7)  Ethnographic approaches to maritime archaeology.

8)  Living maritime heritage.

9)  Coastal and underwater Archaeological surveys and excavations.

10)  Coastal and underwater sites management.

11)  Public engagement and outreach for underwater cultural heritage.

12)  Risk and disaster management of underwater and maritime heritage.

13)  Preservation, protection and presentation of underwater and maritime cultural heritage.

14)  Recent and future technologies in underwater cultural heritage research 

•  Abstracts, and subsequently full papers should be written in English.

• Submission of abstracts (500 words) is open until 15/6/2023 through the following email: jguaa2@arabarch.org

•  Abstracts acceptance/rejection notification: 16/6/2023 until 30/6/2023

•  Submission of full papers (5000 words) is open until 31/12/2023

•   All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed                                   by at least two independent reviewers.

Accepted papers will be published online (ISSN 2537-0278) and printed (ISSN 2537-026X)

The Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists (ISSN: 2537-0278) is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes studies in all aspects of ancient history, culture and archaeology in the Arab Region.
