Abstract
This paper aims to study a lesser-known facet of ancient Egyptian fishing techniques, a supplementary club-like tool depicted in various artistic representations of Old Kingdom tombs. While many studies deal with ancient Egyptian fishing methods, this club-like tool's specific use and significance have not been extensively studied. This study seeks to fill that gap by conducting a thorough analysis of the tool's features and functions, with a particular focus on its depiction in the Old Kingdom tombs. The paper begins by outlining the broader context of the fishing by-line technique in ancient Egypt; this sets the stage for a detailed exploration of the tool in question, which is often shown in conjunction with this technique only. The study identifies the tool's physical characteristics, including its size, shape, and material composition. The analysis reveals that the tool was typically depicted as a short, stout tool, possibly made of wood. Its design suggests that it was a functional component of the fishing-by-line practices. The study sheds light on how it was employed in specific fishing scenarios. For instance, in stunning large fish after they were caught by the hooks, ensuring that they did not escape. Alternatively, it might have served as a multi-purpose tool, aiding the fisherman in various aspects of the fishing process, such as preparing bait. By contrasting the new findings about the significance and usefulness of the club-like tool, the paper challenges some long-held assumptions while reinforcing others. One of the key findings of this research is that the club-like tool equipment did not appear to be designed to serve a certain setting, but rather its role was undetermined. In conclusion, the paper offers a fresh perspective on the ancient Egyptian fishing-by-line technique by focusing on a previously understudied tool. Through a detailed analysis of its artistic representations, the study tries to understand the practical roles of this club-like tool in ancient Egyptian fishing practices. It contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the daily lives of the ancient Egyptians.
